Hello everyone, So, September is just starting and I'm scheduling the October meetup already? You must think I'm crazy. Well, I'm not all that crazy, just wanted you guys to save the date for the Vancouver Blogger Meetup of October, which will coincide with the launch of The Vancouver Observer. Starts at 5:00pm at Ceili's (no cover charge). I'd appreciate if people RSVPd through Meetup.com (although I understand that there's a Facebook event as well for the VO launch, but it helps me to track attendees using this system). Looking forward to seeing you there! Best, Raul

Dear members of the Vancouver Blogger Meetup - those of you who are associated with the other meetups can RSVP anywhere, but I would reccomend to just RSVP to one so that we don't do double-counting (or triple, or whatever...) Seven Meetups have come together for one big summer social mixer. Third Tuesday Meetup, The Vancouver Blogger's Meetup, the Sales Performance Meetup, the Real Estate Technology Meetup and the Young Professionals Meetup began chatting about this earlier this year. New Additions to the Meetup of Meetups is the Wordpress Meetup and the Vancouver Entrepreneur Meetup Group. Many of these Meetups share the same members and same goals; to help people connect, share best practices and create community. This is an event in addition to your regular meetup and has a slightly different format. We expect 400 + people to attend and would appreciate your RSVP asap. From Shane Gibson's invite -- Door prizes valued up to $500.00 donated by Ceilis Irish Pub, Reachd, and Ubertor. Other prizes include an iPod speaker system from EcoSmart Automation and advance copies of Shane Gibson and Stephen Jagger's new book Sociable! This is an opportunity to expand your network, connect, and have fun in a casual atmosphere. Cost: Free (Sponsored by Ceilis) but we would like to suggest a $5 donation (or more) for the Food Bank if you can. Cheques and Cash. Schedule: 6:00 pm Arrive, grab a drink ticket and your Meetup Badge 6:30 pm 5 minute welcome and thanks to the sponsors 6:35 pm til late: Positive community building and networking anarchy! Have fun 8:30 pm prize draws and twitpic of the night award. --- Also, if you are a blogger (or interested in blogging) and find yourself intimidated, come find me (you can recognize me from the many photos I've got here and on Flickr) and I'll introduce you to other fellow bloggers. Looking forward to seeing you there!

LOCATION, DINNER, DRINKS AND RELATED STUFF ANNOUNCEMENT I booked the Regis Room downstairs in the St. Regis Grill & Bar (formerly Anducci's). The St. Regis Hotel is at the corner of Dunsmuir and Granville. It's directly located outside the Dunsmuir exit of the Skytrain Granville Station, so it's plenty accesible, and in a downtown location. I've been warned that it might be noisy as the kitchen is right besides the room, but we'll have to test how things go. I've also been asked whether everybody will want to place dinner orders at the same time. I said that my bloggers were usually very flexible with that. Drinks and dinner are usually placed on separate bills for each participant (you don't have to buy dinner OR drinks, but I've noticed that many people ask for that, so that's why I wanted to make sure to hold the meetup at a restaurant/bar). I hope everyone will like this option. I'm going to be testing different locations through time. Below is the agenda for the meetup. Starts at 6:00pm (SIX) regardless of when the Meetup.com site says it starts. Just FYI. AGENDA 6:00-6:15 pm - Welcoming remarks (Raul) 6:15-7:00 pm - Shane, Lorraine and Raul opening commentary 7:00-7:45 pm - Discussion and moderation (Colleen and panel) 7:45-8:15 pm - Open discussion ABSTRACT Rules, Norms and Web 2.0: Etiquette in an Era of Evolutionary Social Organization Etiquette is frequently seen as a constraining set of behavioral rules, delineating what behaviors are appropriate within a certain social arena and which are not. But in a context of online multiverses, each with its own culture and demographic, what is truly the “right” thing, and how can we know it? Culture clashes and rapid evolution of social norms are ubiquitous in social media: why? What is appropriate etiquette? Is it portable across platforms? What are the ‘right’ kind of rules and norms in an unruly arena such as the online social media world? The participants in this panel will engage in a conversation about what constitutes etiquette, whether or not it relates to a moral imperative, whether it emerges as self-appointed leaders create specific sets of norms and discuss the evolution of etiquette in emergent social media. The implications for codes of behavior and etiquette in Web 2.0 are also discussed.

I have made a decision to hold the Vancouver Bloggers Meetup at the same venue as VanTechKaraoke. The meetup would go from 6-8pm and whoever wants to stay and sing/or/listen to karaoke can do so. My understanding is that Shenanigan's also offers food, just in case. I've been there once and it's not too loud. This is an experiment, as I know that some people said they would not want to go to the End Cafe this time. Best wishes, and see you soon Raul

The previous meetup seemed quite successful and people have raved about The End Cafe. Yeah, it might have been slightly noisy, but they did accomodate us as best as we could (separate bills, reserved a whole area for us, lowered the volume when we requested it). Given that people really enjoyed the presentations by Mandy and Pete on what they blogged about, I'm opening up up to four (4) spots to give short talks about what you blog. If I don't receive enough volunteer speakers by February 20th, I will e-mail a few of you to ask personally :) By the time we hold this meetup, we will have already had Vancouver Twestival and Northern Voice, so I'm sure there'll be LOTS to talk about in relation to blogging. As with any of the other meetups, please do feel free to share this information and invite other bloggers or people who are interested in blogging. Needless to say, my intention with VBM is to make the event MORE inclusive, not LESS inclusive. All the best Raul

Hi everyone, Happy New Year! I know. A bit late to actually continue saying that. I'm sorry I haven't had the time to schedule the January meetup, and I had a quick thought of hijacking Third Tuesday (since there's no 3T for January) but settled for the Third Wednesday (Third Thursday is taken by Vancouver Entrepreneur Meetup). That was more or less the show of hands I got. For this particular meetup, I have decided to start the year with a quick overview of the landscape of blogging and social media in Vancouver. As the organizer of the meetup, newcomers (and some more seasoned members of the community) ask me if there is a central repository or directory of Vancouver blogs. In my experience, there is no such thing, but the wonderful thing about VBM is that it allows for bloggers of all walks of life to come together and share. So, I'll be doing a 2 minute talk about what the Vancouver Blogger Meetup is, my goals for the VBM for this 2009 and then my hope is to go around the room so that people can introduce themselves and share a bit about their blogs. This activity is inspired by the recent breakfast organized by Jeff Pulver (one of the funders of Voice Over IP). While we won't be doing "real life social tagging", my hope is to have a fluid conversation amongst newbies and seasoned bloggers. As always, feel free to email me with any concerns or questions - I am setting up the location as we speak. Best wishes, Raul

Hi all, I talked to Rebecca Bollwitt (AKA Miss604) re: holding the Vancouver Blogger Meetup at The Cellar at the same time as the Best of 604 Awards. I thought it would be a good idea to get both events together as we are all bloggers in the 604 area! Here is the EventBrite site to confirm your attendance. http://bestof604.eve ntbrite.com/ If you prefer, you can RSVP here (through Meetup.com) and I will do all the reservations at Best of 604 on EventBrite. I hope you can make it! It will be fun to share in an event that is intended to highlight the very Best of the local Vancouver blogging scene. Kudos to Rebecca for putting together this event! Best, Raul

The November 2008 Vancouver Blogger Meetup will take place at Gene Cafe (a really cool, hip coffee shop at the corner of Kingsway and Main). As we did in the past couple of meetups, there is no particular format. There will be wifi so feel free to bring your laptop. Gene has very few non-gluten options for food, but at least they do have some food options. There are lots of alternate small little places for food (Kishu Mountain for sushi, for example, is less than 2 blocks away) Two things came out of the previous meetup, if you wanted to have a centralized discussion: 1) There is no centralized, local directory of blogs. 2) There is a very wide variety of blogs (e.g. more than just social media/PR/tech) and it'd be fun (at least for me!) to hear more from those bloggers who don't do social media/PR/tech. Looking forward to seeing you there! Also, please remember to bring your Meetup fee in cash along with you ($ 1.00). I am hoping this day (the third THURSDAY of the month, two days after Third Tuesday) will allow us to be consistent. I am aware that this month there might be a clash with another meetup, I hope to resolve that in the future. Best wishes, Raul

This is the actual real deal. After months of not having a meetup, this is the one for July. Please RSVP as I would need to tell Shane (the Blackwater Cafe owner) of how many people actually will show up. I would also appreciate suggestions for format. While the previous Blogger Meetups have not had any specific format, maybe this one could be sort of a "let's share our perspective on". I have a lot of experience moderating roundtables, so if you feel comfortable with that idea, maybe I could moderate the roundtable discussion on a certain topic. Suggestions accepted. The alternative would be, of course, to just hang out together :) Please bring $1.50 (one dollar and fifty) to cover Meetup.com charges. Thanks!
