Green Meetups

Looking for ways to live a greener, more Earth-friendly life?

Whether you want to grow a sustainable garden, swap clothes with your neighbors, or find a community of fellow entrepreneurs ready to change the world, we’ve highlighted a few Meetups doing their part to reduce their carbon footprint and live a healthier, happier life on our beautiful planet.

The Maine Trash Runners

How they’re saving our planet: They’re making Maine a little cleaner and getting exercise too!

What they say:

Ever notice how much trash there is when you’re out on your morning walk, jog, run, bike ride, hike, skip, etc.? Well, there is A LOT! That’s where the Maine Trash Runners come in. We come from all walks of life and all different backgrounds, but we have a shared passion for taking care of our environment. And it doesn’t matter how fast or slow you think you may be, its all about getting some exercise, picking up some trash, and having a fun while doing it.”

Makes me want to put on my running shoes and clean up the trash in my Brooklyn neighborhood. Now if only I can find where I put them…

Dallas Sustainable Living & Organic Gardening

How they’re saving our planet: They offer workshops on everything from how to become a farmer to creating an urban co-housing community.

What they say:

“Meet other local people who are making their lives more sustainable–whether in leaps or tiny steps. We are interested in many areas of sustainable living: organic gardening, permaculture, starting a green community, homesteading, lobbying our political leaders to create a more sustainable environment, climate change, peak 0il, and preparedness.

Most of us are urban or exurban dwellers who are trying to create a positive impact on our environment and develop varied degrees of self sufficiency. Some of us are also interested in creating/moving to a sustainable eco-community.”

Here’s a Meetup that inspired me to finally plant those squash seeds I bought: Front Yard Herb Spiral Workshop.

Green Sustainable Living Hong Kong

How they’re saving our planet: Hong Kong is known for having some pretty bad pollution, but the Green Sustainable Living Hong Kong Meetup group is finding some creative ways to create a cleaner, greener environment.

What they say:

We aim to better ourselves and educate citizens for a more sustainable living in Hong Kong. From urban farming to reconnecting communities and from the sharing economy to the renewable energy, we have to take actions in all aspects of sustainability to ensure we can make an impact and hopefully save the planet through the aggregation of our individual effort.”

They’ve recently been hosting Bamboo Building Workshops to cut, clean, and collect bamboo to build a new structure at their farm. Not only are they making use of a resource which grows abundantly in the area, but members are learning skills that they can use for the rest of their lives.

Green Drinks Barcelona

How they’re saving our planet: Conversation is everything. The Green advocates are folks interested in the environment who chat about it over drinks. Let the sustainable ideas (and the wine!) flow.

What they say:

“Do you have an interest in supporting a responsible and sustainable world or even have a “green” business or job? Meet environmentally and eco-conscious people with different backgrounds who are interested in or support a green philosophy in their personal or business lives. Network, expand your knowledge and share ideas and social activities.

Whether you are someone being just interested in sustainability or natural and ecological living, or want tobe or are already involved in the green business, we welcome you to this group.

Join us to learn, grow, and create a sustainable Barcelona and earth. The world needs people like you!”

This Meetup’s organizer is a mom and a documentary film director who recently opened an eco-coworking space in Barcelona. That’s pretty cool, if you ask me.

If you’re in Barcelona, pop by their next monthly Meetup on November 5.

Zero Waste Austria

How they’re saving our planet: They host talks and discussions with Europe’s leaders in sustainability with a goal to reduce Austria’s waste to ZERO.

What they say:

“Zero Waste Austria connects people that are passionate about Zero Waste. The aim is to connect individuals, organisations and experts. We will present different approaches how to reduce food waste and waste in general and present solutions. We are looking forward to see you, to get inspired and or to tell us your way to a Zero Waste Society!”

At a recent Meetup, they discussed food waste: how it happens and what people are doing to reduce it on a large scale.

Every day superheroes like these members make a huge difference in the world. They remind us of the many great ways we can all contribute, together.

Erin Rauch-Sasseen
Erin is enthusiastic about making Meetup members and Organizers super happy. You can usually find her rocking out on stage with her sisters and/or reading plays aloud in the park. She has no idea what Shakespeare is saying, but that's part of the fun.
